SUB-STRAND: THE HUMAN DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
- Welcome you back to your number one electronic classes on E-Classroom.com.
In today’s lessons we are taken a look at the digestive systems in humans. Let’s take a look at what we are learning to know;
- The concept of food and its importance to human life.
- Enzymes released when a particular food is taken
Food: is said to be any substances taken into the body for growth and repair, to obtain heat and energy and to undergo certain metabolisms such as, excretion and respiration, etc.
In simple terms, food is anything we take into the body in order to obtain energy.
So if I take in anything into my body, I do so in order for the body to obtain energy and undergo life process and more importantly for growth.
Consider what you have eaten today and know that they are all food substances, let’s mention some of them;
- Cassava,
- bread,
- milk,
- beans,
- ‘Kontomire’,
- eggs,
- groundnuts,
- Corn Porridge and many others.
It should be noted that, foods eaten contain different substances.
Imagine what were put together to prepare your rice and stew you just took. Let’s mention them – oil/butter, pepper, water, rice, onion, ginger, garlic, tomatoes, and meat. All these are food substances.
You should also know that the foods taken into the body are not what the body needs, rather what is found in the food. They are what we call the essential materials. These essential materials are called the nutrients.
What then are nutrients: nutrients are basically the important materials which are found in foods. These nutrients can be grouped into five and they are
- Carbohydrates
- Proteins
- Mineral salts
- Vitamins
- Fats and oil
Those are what the body needs.
The most important thing to note here is that, these nutrients have to been processed or broken down before the body can use them.
So we can say the body actually uses what is obtained after the nutrients are broken down.
Now, what is obtained from the broken down nutrients is what we term as the ‘END PRODUCT’. Every nutrient has got its unique end –product. E.g.; the by-product of carbohydrate isn’t the same as protein.
Once again, before the end – products are gotten, certain biological catalyst have to be released to help break the food down.
These biological catalyst released differ depending on the type of nutrient taken at a given time.
These catalysts are what we call, ENZYMES.
I hope you enjoyed this piece of lessons as we hope to look at some examples of the five food nutrients stated, the end – products of the food nutrients and what Enzymes are released when these food nutrients are taken.
Enjoy your day
