I welcome you once again to learnrite.com as we take a look at a question under osmosis
In this lesson, we are talking a look at test of practical question under osmosis. In fact, this question though looks simple but it is the most fearful questions students have to deal with most especially those preparing to write their science exams.
Let’s take a look at the question on osmosis
The diagram below illustrates an experimental set up used for demonstrating osmosis. Study this carefully and use it to answer the questions which follow.
- What will happen to the level of the solution in I after 6 hours?
- State the steps for the experiment as shown above.
- Label the parts I and II
- What is the aim of the experiment?
- Explain your observations
Now let’s delve into finding out what is required of us or candidates.
Question (a)
Read this also, BECE PRACTICAL QUESTIONS ON HEAT ENERGY
Explanation
Question first question requires us to state what will be the level of the solution in the thistle funnel or the visking tube. Since the water is found in the beaker and for that matter molecules of the water are more concentrated in the beaker, hence the molecules will move to into the thistle funnel where the water molecule is less concentrated.
Answer
Therefore, the level of solution in the thistle funnel will rise.
Question (b)
Explanation
Here, we are to state the step by step procedures taken to mount the entire set up. That’s from the beginning to the end
Answer
A visking tub or thistle funnel fitted in it, is a graduated tube.
A cellophane paper which will serve as a permeable membrane (a medium through which the water molecules will pass) is tied to the bottom of the thistle funnel.
A stand and clamp is use to hold the set-up into the beaker
The thistle funnel is filled with sugar solution with eosin dye and the level is recorded
Water is poured into the beaker and the level is recorded.
A control experiment is set up to proof the experiment
In the control experiment, water is poured into the thistle funnel instead of sugar solution dyed with eosin dye.
The two set – ups are left for 24 hours
Now we look at question c
Question (c)
Part I is sugar solution dyed with eosin dye
Part II is Thistle funnel
Question (d)
This question requires students to write why this experiment was made. It was made to show what?
Experiment to show osmosis using a non – living thing as a semi-permeable membrane
Question (e)
This very question also wants candidates or students to write what will happen to level of sugar solution in the thistle funnel and that of the water in the beaker.
Answer
- The level of sugar solution in the thistle funnel will rise because water molecule is less concentrated in the beaker but molecules of sugar solution is more concentrated in the thistle funnel, so the water molecule will move into the thistle funnel, causing the level of the sugar solution increases
- But in the control experiment, the level of the water and that of the thistle funnel will remain same. Because the equal concentration of water molecules
Short answers for the osmosis question above
- The level of sugar solution will rise whiles the level of water in the beaker decreases.
- Level of water remains same in the control experiment.
