20% Increase in Teachers’ & Nurses’ Salaries Could Employ 50,000 Unemployed
The Chief Executive Officer of the public sector reforms, Mr Kusi Boafo has indicated that any attempt by the government to increase the salaries of teachers and nurses would mean, side-lining 50,000 more people who are unemployed.
This translates to mean it would be better off employing the unemployed ones than to increase the salaries of teachers and nurses. This he said; the government can channel such monies to ensure that the unemployed graduates are given equal opportunities than to consider increasing the salaries of teachers and nurses.
This news comes at a time when teachers are calling on the government of Ghana to cushion them in order to reduce the shocks they have been receiving due to the current economic outlook of the country. The professionals who are making their voices to be heard by the government so that measures will be put in place to adjust their salary structure may somehow get demoralized by statement of the CEO, saying this call can employ 50000 more workers.
Should government increase salaries of teachers – Kusi Boafo
Everyone believes the turnout of events as far as the economy is concerned is not any better than abysmal, citizens have to adjust and readjust to be able to make three-square meals regardless of the unfortunate situation the hardship puts us into, but the cry of teachers sounds right. There have been couple of situations where people have taught for many years without having to have anything to put hands on at the end of their service. Despite the peanuts given to teachers, Mr Kusi Boafo says that increment could employ 50000 more workers who are unemployed.
Teachers across the country have hinted that should the government fail to respond to the Cost of Living Allowance (CoLA) they are calling for, the government would have no other option than to seeing them embarking on strike action. The question here is, whether this grievance putting up by teachers would be addressed or not, time lives to tell the merits of events. For now, teachers across the country would have to be enjoying themselves with the comment made by the CEO of the Public Sector Reforms which goes; “20% increment of Teachers and Nurses is equivalent to 50,000 workers.”

This increment, he says, could suffice for payment of salaries for these unemployed individuals up to a period of five years. Now, begin to make your own analysis to see if the cry of the Ghanaian teachers would be responded in a positive way? This is a food for thought and not a subject to be put at the centre of glaring sights.
Do you think it is a good call for the government to put deaf ears on the plights of Teachers and instead, enrol 50,000 more workers as indicated by the CEO into the service?
Let us know what you make of his statement, thank you.
