Why Kids Should Be Taught Phonics Instead of letter Names
The topic of today’s discussion is how kids should be introduced to phonics. I think that kids should be introduced to phonics early so that they can become great readers later in their lives.
The most important thing for a child’s reading development is reading, and the best way to read is through phonics. By being exposed to phonics early, children can learn the skills they need to read well and become lifelong readers.
What is phonics?
Phonics is the systematic study of the sounds used in written language and the rules for combining them to make meaningful words.
In the process of learning and applying phonics, children make transitions from one sound to another on the basis of sound patterns that are based on the relationships between sounds.
Schools should introduce phonics to their students; the idea of teaching phonics is not new. Indeed, schools have been teaching students how to read for hundreds of years. It is now of essence to embrace the teaching of phonics, most especially (deprived) schools in Ghana.
In the days when education was all about the crème de la crème, reading instruction normally included methods such as whole word recognition or word attack. These use whole words to build nascent phonics. However, research and experience have shown that these methods can be ineffective, especially in the long term.
In classrooms, we have to learn about the best practices in teaching phonics, but the first step in teaching phonics is to help children understand how to recognize different letter sounds in their word and how they are used in new words.

A Few Benefits
It is used to develop comprehension of written language so that the child has the necessary skills to read and understand books independently.
This process helps the child to become a better and more confident reader over time.
Some key takeaways.
The steps in teaching phonics are as follows:
First, the teacher introduces the different sounds of letters, such as the sound of the letter A and the sound of the letter Z.
After the children understand the sounds of letters, the teacher turn the class to read using phonics. This is when the teacher introduces the concept of letter sounds and how they can be combined in words to make new sounds.
For example, the teacher may show the children how the letter A is used in the word cat and how it is used in the word dad to make the sound cat.
The teacher will also show the children how the letter Z is used in the word zoo and how it is used in the word zone to make the sound zone.
