You can absolutely prevent this, enjoy more and learn and remember more for exams.

Sit back and enjoy our write up on how to learn and remember more for exams of any kind.

Writing after Reading Method

One of the learning hacks you can adopt to learn and remember more for exams is to write them after reading. Of course this is most common method used by many across the globe but when not done in the right way, the result could be devastating. It is not just a matter of reading and trying to write them out. Materials used for this method can render its effectiveness to zero. Why the need to try writing them out after learning? Writing is a kind of synchronous action where the hand communicates directly with the brain and vice versa. The hand is able to decode the message received from the brain and that is a great refresher tool. Though this method is generally used as indicated above, but the method, when poorly done could give poor results. I advise you dedicate a fresh jotter pad or writing pad to each course or subject module. This will ensures related information is kept at one place. With this, your eyes get to flash on whatever you have written anytime you pick the jotter or writing pad. This is a great memorizing tool and it should be done in the right way. Don’t ever use one jotter or writing pad for more than one subject or course.

Linking to objects Method

Another hack you can use in learning and remembering more for exams to link what you are learning to items you frequently touch. Linking is one of the most effective methods used in remembering things faster. This is just like having an appointment at 3 O’clock pm and then you tell a friend to remind you. You hardly missed the chance of honouring the appointment, so is the linking method. Assuming you are learning about Newton’s first law of floatation which states that, “a body displaces equal volumes of fluid on which it is placed”.

Now imagine a wooden spatula in flour, definitely the spatula will push some of the flour down or compressed it, this creates a cavity at the very point is it placed. Same way a ship floating on water does, some water is pushed away and this if the water were to be in powdery form just like the flour, there will be cavity at the very point it stays. Now link the wooden spatula pushing away (displacing) some flour to the law of floatation. If there are not familiar things around you, try to create one. You can learn more and remember more for exams when you adopt this strategy.

Mnemonic Method

Another method which is synonymous to the linking method is the use of mnemonics to beat lengthy paragraphs. In fact this method is arguably the best among all the other methods. This is because of its ability to shrink multiple paragraphs or sentences into just a word. Yeah just a word, I’m not exaggeration. If the concept you are learning is about dispersion of white light and you want easily memorise and recall the colours of white light, just pick the first letter of the names of the colours and put them together to form a word. The colours are (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet). Putting the first letters together will form (ROYGBIV). This becomes so easy to learn and remember more for exams.

One will say what if first letters don’t form a common word. Just look for letters from the concept you are reading to form a common word. It could be the first and second letters. Look at the concept below, (Effects of sitting behind the computer for so long)

  • Wrist pains
  • Eyes straining
  • Back pain
  • Sight defects

Putting the first letter can form a common word like (WEBS) but we can as well include the letters in the second words to each line. Let see how that will be. We have, (SidEsBapWrip). You can change the positions of the words to get a common word. Note, when including the letters of the second words to each line, don’t capitalise those letters as seen in the one above. This is to show that they all form one sentence or phrase and they are on the same line. This is of course the surest bet for those are not able to memorise long sentences.

Mirror Reflection Method

In a case where you are learning concepts whose opposite form gives other concepts, I advise you use what is called mirror reflection method. See a picture in the examples (differences between metals and non-metals), (characteristics of metals and non-metals). There wouldn’t be the need to learn all these concepts separately. Remember the smartest succeeds on the battlefield. Just learn one of the concepts and make a mirror reflection to produce the others. This does not only save time but also shrinks bulk concepts into slimmer ones.

Other Methods

Other methods we can use include the following;

  • Understanding the concept before you try to memorise them
  • By talking to one’s self on what you have read
  • Alternatively, you can put all of these methods together. Since none works in isolation.

Voila, enjoy your studies as you will be able to learn and remember more for exams.
