Question 6a, BECE 2012

What are; i. Annual plants  ii. Perennial plants

Annual plants are plants which complete their life cycle in one year

Perennial plants are plants which continue to grow from season to season after harvest.

1994 BECE Q1d Integrated Science

  1. Describe how ions are formed from atoms
  2. State two differences between a proton and an electron
  3. Write the chemical symbol for each of the following

Atom of lithium

A molecule of chlorine

An atom of Oxygen

Ions are formed when an atom gains or loses an electron. When an atom gains electrons the number of electrons becomes greater than the number of protons and vice versa. This forms positive and negative ions.

ProtonElectron
Found in the nucleusFound on the shell
Positive charge particleNegative charge particle
It is not involved in chemical reactionIt is involved in chemical reaction

An atom of Lithium ==> Li

A molecule of Chlorine  ==> Cl2

An atom of oxygen ==> O

2004 Q 2B I Integrated Science Past Questions

Explain why an atom is said to be chemically neutral

Answer

This is because the number of protons is equal to the number of electrons, so they cancel out which make the net charge equal to zero.

2002 Q 1b

  1. Define valency
  2. State the valencies for the following elements and radicals

Iron

Zinc

Hydroxyl

Carbonate

Solution

Valency is the combining powers of an element

Iron ==> 2 0r 3

Zinc ==> 2

Hydroxyl ==> 1

Carbonate ==> 2

1991 Q 1 (e) Integrated Science Past Question

  1. Carbon dioxide is prepared in the laboratory by pouring some dilute hydrochloric acid on Calcium carbonate. Give a balance equation for this reaction.
  2. How would you test for carbon dioxide?
  3. Give one use of carbon dioxide

Solutions

CaCO3 + 2HCl2 ==> CaCl2 + H2O + CO2

You can test carbon dioxide by passing it through lime water, the colour will turn milky.

Uses of carbon dioxide

  • For making soft drinks
  • For preserving fruits
  • Used as refrigerant
  • Used as fire extinguisher

1992 BECE Q 2C

  1. Using any ammonium compound. Describe how the general preparation of ammonia gas is prepared. No diagram is required.
  2. Write the chemical equation for the preparation.

See suggested answers

Ammonia gas can be prepared by heating powdered ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH)

The ammonia gas produced is dried by passing it through calcium oxide

NH4Cl + NaOH ==> NaCl + H2O + CO2

2016 Q 2C

  1. List two properties of water
  2. Explain why it is advisable to wash clothes with soft
  3.  Using litmus paper, explain why water is neutral.

Find answers

Properties of water

  • Odourless
  • Colourless
  • Insipid/ tasteless
  • Boils at 1000CT
  • Neutral to litmus paper
  • Freezes at 00C

Why it is good to wash clothes with soft water

  • It is because it easily lathers with soap so one does not waste soap

Water is neutral to litmus paper because

  • It has a PH of 7, which makes it neither acidic or alkaline/basic
