Captain Smart And ECG In A Fresh Argument, See Why

The renowned broadcaster and the host of Onua TV mourning show, Godsbrain Nyirenkyi Smart called in the media terrain as Captain Smart goes hard on ECG once again. Not long ago the broadcaster criticized the Electricity Company over the impasses between them and the people of Krobo.

But it seems the Electricity Company (ECG) has fallen in Captain Smart’s hot oil again over a comment made by them. They have been dragged from head to toe in a new feud.

What we should know

Last month, the ECG went to the Public Utility Regulatory Commission for an increment in electricity tariffs. This, according to them will allow them provide good services to the Ghanaian citizens. The new tariff increment was scheduled to take effect starting September 1st 2022.

Before the inception of this new measure, the company (ECG) came to inform its customers to be circumspect about how energy is used in their various homes. This was mostly targeted at household customers since the new tariff requires household customers to pay more than commercial users.

The company has warned that, household users should make judicious use of energy and to avoid wastages which might lead to increment in their bills. But it looks as if this didn’t settle well with Captain Smart.

Following this, Mr. Smart decided to wedge into the conversation. According to him, the ECG has no credibility to tell Ghanaians to use power judiciously.

What may have occasioned this statement from the Captain Smart?

Mr Smart indicated that the company itself does not have systems that allow them to store the excess power produced. For that matter they should spare customers with such noise.

He went ahead to say, because the company has not systems to store excess power produced they go waste. This, he claimed the cost of excess power is shifted onto the customers. So if we are talking about the one who is not able to save power that should be the ECG and not Ghanaians.

Though the new tariffs have begun and all customers who will be patronizing on the services of the ECG will be paying more than what they used to pay, particularly household customers.

Mr Smart said it’s about time the monopoly enjoyed by the company is broken; he believes this has given them some form of immunity to do whatever they like. They give power when they like and take it as they wish. A peculiar example he cited is about the case of the disagreement between the Kroboland and the Company.

The broadcaster also claimed that, it is as a result of this monopoly issue why the former President Kuffour brought GridCo to break the chain. So that power generated by the Volta River Authority does no to the ECG directly, but he thinks this is not enough.

He further dived into matters of rationalities, where he said he doesn’t understand the functions of the company in all these power vending activities. He cited the case where Ghana gives power to neighbouring countries like Ivory Coast and Togo. But cost of buying power is far lower than Ghana.

Again, he said power is sold to Ivory Coast at lower prices but when Ghana goes to them for power aid, it is sold to us at high price. This, he said they should be something wrong somewhere.

He put herself in the shoes of the President and said, he would have reduced the sixteen regions to the former and has each region having its own power distribution services.

So just imagine; we would have about 10 the likes of ECG across the country. The Eastern, Ashanti, Volta regions will have their own power vending companies and same will be replicated in the other regions too.

Captain Smart on his usual rant on Onua TV questioned the ECG where the excess power produced goes? He referenced this from the last interview he had on Onua TV with the P.R.O of the company.

During the interview, it came to light that there are less power usage than what it is produced.

He asked if the company has systems that save the excess power but the response was no. so it came as no surprise when said today that the ECG has no credibility to tell Ghanaians to make good use of power. Since they themselves have no means of saving power produced.

As to whether the company needed this new tariff policy, the loudmouth Captain Smart asked about the quality of services they provide.

In bringing his rant to a close, he went on to lower the substance of the message from the ECG (that Ghanaians should avoid power wastages) and call on the company to do the right thing?

He made this concluding remark in line with the current issues between Krobo and them. Once again, questioned the whereabouts of the power that they used to send to the people of Krobo in the times when they (Krobos) were not giving light. Since the company has no systems in place to save power.

This is what the host Onua TV morning show has to say about the new message issued by ECG following the inception of the implementation of the new tariffs toady.
