EXAMINATION MALPRACTICE
The rate at which examination malpractice is taking place is very worrying. It has been attracting public attention and condemnation from people from all walks of life. It is one of the problems which occupy the centre stage of discussions on our FM stations, television stations and other public fora. Malpractice is the wrongdoing that takes place either before, during or after a test. A number of factors account for the incidence of examination malpractice. Prominent among them are the lack of adequate preparation and indiscipline among the students.
Many teachers are not able to complete the syllabuses in time.
Closely associated with this problem is the fact, that most of the students do not apply themselves diligently to their books. They therefore use dubious means to pass their examinations. Indiscipline is a major factor that leads to examination malpractice. Students who habitually flout school rules and regulations tend to perform poorly at examinations. Such deviant students do not attend classes regularly and punctually.
Again, they do not go for prep. They fritter away the time meant for academic work. Consequently, they indulge in examination malpractice in order to pass their examinations. The effects of examination malpractice are many and varied. Our certificates are not recognized both at home and abroad. Academic standards fall and at workplaces, square pegs are put in round holes. Incompetence and inefficiency become the order of the day and the economy finally suffers.
The stakeholders of education must act together to stem the tide of examination malpractice. Teachers must work very hard to complete their syllabuses. Parents should cooperate with teachers to instill discipline into the erring students. Importantly, students must learn very hard and enthusiastically.
I am hopeful that if these suggestions are put into practice the problem of examination malpractice will evaporate in the near future.

A RECENT CELEBRATION IN MY COMMUNITY
On 16th October, 1997, a grand birthday party was organized by my elder brothers and sisters for our father on the occasion of his 60th birthday anniversary. Preparation towards that magnificent celebration started one month preceding the anniversary day. We bought a lot of confectionery. Five sheep and twenty fowls were slaughtered for the ceremony. A large number of assorted drinks were purchased.
On the eve of the celebration, the women in the family and their friends gathered in our residence to prepare the stew and fry some meat. The men were equally busy beautifying the house and its surroundings. We hired many plastic chairs and tables for the celebration.
On the day of the celebration, we woke up unusually early to finalise our preparations. The invited guests began to arrive after 1.20pm. The programme had been scheduled to start at 2.00pm and end at 7.00pm. The invited guests included some of my paternal and maternal relatives, friends of my father, fellow church members, colleagues of my father and some friends of other members of the household. A popular band known as the Striking Force was in attendance to provide melodious music. Everybody at the ceremony was gorgeously dressed.
At exactly 2.00pm the chairman of the function, Dr. Eric Agyeman asked all of us present to stand up for the opening prayer. He thanked God for taking care of us. He committed the function into God’s hands to ensure its success. He further thanked God for making it possible for my father to reach the age of sixty years. He requested more years of good health and prosperity for my father and the family.
A great deal of merry-making took place there. All of us presented gifts and messages of well-being to my father. In a short speech, my father thanked everybody present for honouring his invitation and presenting him with such lovely gifts. After the closing prayer had been said, the chairman made his final remarks and the celebration came to an end.

MY FAVOURITE TEACHER
I have been taught by many professional teachers. I admire all of them, however, my favourite teacher is Mr. Peter Osei Poku. He hails from Bekwai in the Ashanti Region, but lives and works in Sunyani.
He is about thirty-eight years old. His parents are Mr and Mrs. Osei. He is 1.6 metres tall. He is married to Mrs. Juliana Osei Poku who is a nurse. Their marriage is ten years old now. They have two pleasant children. Both of them are boys. He lives at Sunyani Low-Cost Residential Area, which is opposite to the Nurses’ Quarters. His house number is L.C. 48.
He lives with his lovely wife and children. The games he likes best are soccer and table tennis. Not only is he an enthusiast in these sporting disciplines, but also a skilful footballer and a table-tennis player. He has a number of certificates which he acquired in recognition and appreciation of his talents, in these fields when he was a student. The schools he attended were always proud of him.
His hobbies are reading novels and watching films. He is a staunch Christian. He attends the Methodist Church. He dislikes vices like gossip, stealing, lies, disobedience and laziness. He received his basic education at Saint Peter’s Preparatory School at Takoradi. He furthered his education at Mfantsipim Senior High School at Cape Coast.
He was trained as a teacher at Saint Joseph’s Teacher Training College at Bechem in the Brong Ahafo Region. Currently, he holds the rank of Senior Superintendent and teaches at Redemption Junior High School at Sunyani.
He is my favourite teacher because of how he inspires me to learn hard, his unparalleled commitment to duty and his outspokenness in defending the truth.

A FESTIVAL I HAVE WITNESSED
A festival can be defined as a time of celebration which is marked by special observances. Festivals are very important occasions on the traditional calendars of the various traditional areas. All festivals have
political, social and religious significance for the people who celebrate them. They are celebrated for many reasons. Among them are the following: to mark the beginning of the traditional year, to offer thanks to the Supreme Being for his care and protection, to offer thanks to the ancestors and spirits for their protection during the past year, to mark the beginning of harvesting of a staple food, for example, yam and the beginning of a new agricultural year.
The festival I have witnessed before is the Odwira festival. It is celebrated by the people of Akuapem Traditional Area. Before the celebration of the festival, a period of forty days is declared for meditation and rest. During this period, singing, drumming and dancing are not allowed.
The festival period lasts for seven days. It commences on a Monday and ends on a Sunday. Special rituals are performed on each day.
On Monday, there is a clean-up campaign. The people weed their surroundings. They also clear the path leading to the royal mausoleum. The purpose of clearing this path is to facilitate the arrival of the ancestors who are believed to join the celebrations. On Tuesday, the ban on the eating of new yam is lifted. Moreover, the ban on singing, drumming, dancing and all forms of noise making is lifted. This follows the presentation of the sacred symbol known as Odwira to the paramount chief. It is fetched from the royal mausoleum by the Chief Executioner and the State Executioners.
Wednesday is set aside for remembering relatives, especially those who died during the past year. The day is marked by wailing, drinking and drumming. People put on mourning clothes and fast throughout the day. The chief sits in state and receives condolences and greetings from the people.
In the afternoon, the chief in turn goes around to greet and offer condolences to all stool occupants. There is general fasting on Thursday. In almost every house, delicious meals are prepared. People are free to visit any home, including the chief’s palace to eat. In the afternoon, bowls of mashed yam either mixed with oil or not, and boiled eggs are
carried in a procession from the chief’s palace to the ancestors at a shrine. That is the place where it is believed most of the ancestors were buried. The most important ceremony takes place in the evening, soon after nightfall. The Black Stools are taken to the stream for ceremonial cleansing. The purification that gives the festival its name ODWIRA is then performed. This ritual symbolizes the cleaning of the traditional area and the people.
