Labour relations describe the formal relationship between management (employers) and the workers (employees). The aim of every labour relations system is to maintain industrial peace, harmony or cordiality between management and workers. It could also be between superiors and subordinates. All the various practices, which are put in place, are to motivate the worker and raise his moral. All these are in bits to encourage him to give or contribute effectively to the attainment of organizational goals.

We can also say it is the relationship between workers and managers or management of an institution or company.

This is the basic form of labour association within the circles of the labour relations. It was established in 1969 and it includes at least two employers who have in between at least 15 employees each. The need for the association arose from the awareness amongst employers of the value of consultation among themselves and of a combined approach to matters of their business interest.

Trade Union Congress

The Ghana Trade Union Congress has been structures in such a way that almost all sectors of the economy have national unions. In all, there are currently 17 and more unions and the number keeps increasing. Few of them include; Teachers and Educational Workers Union, Industrial and Commercial Workers Union, Ghana National Association of Graduate Teachers, National Association of Teachers, Timber Workers Union, etc.

Why Workers Join Labour Unions?

Workers who join unions stand to gain the following goodies;

  1. There is a job security for workers. Members enjoy protection, exploitations, unfair treatment and arbitrary treatments, harassment, and unfair dismissals.
  2. The Trade Union Congress ensures that employers pay their employees the minimum legislated wages and salaries. Unions also ensure that employers obtain and maintain just, proper and equitable rate of wages, hours of work and other conditions of work. In short, they enforce minimum wages and salaries payment.
  3. The Trade Union Congress ensures that employers satisfy the needs of employees. For instance employees should be remunerated according to their qualification and output at work. That is satisfaction of employees’ needs at work place.
  4. Improvement of working conditions. The unions makes it possible for employers to  conform to the factory, office and shop act of 1970. The act compels employers by law to be responsible for making certain provisions for safety, health and welfare of employees at their work place.
  5. Unions regulate relations and settle disputes between their members and their employers. They help in the settlement of disputes between employers and employees.
  6. They also provide assistance in times of sickness or other personal distress. They also provide educational opportunities at union sponsored schools.
