“Is Free SHS at Risk of Cancellation? Review Raises Questions”
In a bit for the country to obtain some fiscal space, and to also obtain the 3billion dollar assistance from the international monetary fund, the Free SHS is tabled for review.
This review is led the by the World Bank. According to the Finance Minister of Ghana, Ken Ofori Atta it is actually in a right direction to have external or fresh brains to look at the viability of the program. This is why the World Bank is the agency leading this chart.
This is not the only program that is said to be under review, flagship programs such as the One District One Factory, Planting for Food and Jobs among others.
This review raises a question in the minds of many Ghanaians. Though, the ruling party and government have reiterated that the Free SHS won’t be tempered with despite going to the IMF for bailout
At the inception of this program, many called for it reviews including the Opposition Party, National Democratic Congress. The NDC called for the review of the Free SHS program. This became the talk of the town in run-up to the 2020 general election.
This comment from the NDC about the program was interpreted by the NPP as cancellation. Now, the program is under review, does it mean it is going to be cancelled as read by the NPP sometimes ago when the NDC raised this concern? How would others’ review meant cancellation but this current one means something different? Probably the dictionary has different meaning to review?
The Finance Minister has indicated that, a paper will be issued on the review of the flagship program next year to enable the country move on with her IMF quest.
