A Story of Hope and Breaking Tradition In the short story “Ripples” by Peter Paul Adolinama, we are introduced to Mama Adamu, the first wife of a wealthy man who has little patience for his wives. Mama Adamu’s husband takes a fourth wife, Amina, who becomes like a sister to her.
Unfortunately, Amina dies while giving birth to her daughter Abiba, and Mama Adamu is tasked with raising her. Amina’s family ignores the post-mortem results that suggest her death was due to underdeveloped reproductive organs, instead chalking it up to destiny.
As Abiba reaches the age of fourteen and is set to be given away in marriage, Mama Adamu gives her Amina’s diary, which predicts Abiba’s fate as suffering the same fate as her mother and grandmother.
Abiba becomes worried and wonders where help will come from. Fortunately, her school teacher Mr. Yakubu and his daughter Jamila are opposed to the practice of older men marrying young girls and offer to help Abiba.
On the day of Abiba’s marriage, Mr. Yakubu and Jamila arrive to rescue her, and she hears someone scream “Run”. With hope in her heart and knowing that this is her only chance, Abiba runs away.
Common themes of Ripple by Peter Paul Adolinama
The theme of the story is breaking tradition and hope for a better future. Despite the oppressive customs and traditions that surround her, Abiba finds a way to escape her fate with the help of those who believe in a different way of life.

In the story, Mama Adamu’s husband takes multiple wives and Abiba is set to be given away in marriage at a young age, all in the name of tradition.
