The Process:

The teacher then shows the student how to subtract 3 from 12, which equals 9. We continue to subtract 3 from 9, which equals 6, and then subtract 3 from 6, which equals 3. Finally, we subtract 3 from 3, which equals 0. The teacher asks the student to count the number of times we subtracted 3, which in this case is 4. Therefore, the answer to the problem is 4.
The teacher then presents several more problems using the same method, gradually increasing the difficulty as the student becomes more comfortable with the process. For example, the teacher may present a problem like “What is 36 divided by 6?” and show the student how to subtract 6 from 36 six times to arrive at the answer of 6.
