Differentiated Education: Understanding the Importance of Customized Learning
Unlike those times, classrooms today have evolved and so the method of instruction. Time have proven that, every learner needs are so important. This is where differentiated education comes in; differentiated education is an approach that includes making sure instructions is offered to meet the individual learning abilities, interests and style. In this content, we will explore what is meant by differentiated education, the concept, benefits as well as some practical examples on how it can be implemented.
What is Meant by Differentiated Education?
This involves the teaching strategy that seeks to offer a customized learning experience for every learner in the classroom. The overall objective of this strategy is to provide all inclusive learning environments and to make it possible for students to access the curriculum notwithstanding their interests or any other inhibiting factors.
In differentiated learning environments, teachers bring on board different methods of teaching, some of which may include; visual, auditory, and kinesthetic techniques, to help students learn and retain information more effectively.
The Importance of Differentiated Education
In expanding the conversations about the merits of differentiated education, the sense of engagement and motivation it offers to students cannot be underestimated. It is said that, when lessons are tailored to individual needs in the classroom, the students are motivated and have the willingness to contribute to the lessons. This paves the way for them to succeed.
Again I will want to draw your attention to the sense of community in the classroom as one of the importance of differentiated education. This strategy of instruction fosters inclusivity and breeds idea generation and critical thinking. This in the long run, offers the space for the learners to become independent, and to solve problems with or without support.
I believe strongly you have come to the realization that, using a sole method of giving instructions is not the one you want to encourage in your classroom or school anymore. Prioritize individual needs and don’t assume one method of teaching is enough to yield positive instructional outcomes. Below are some differentiated education examples you would love to comb through.
Examples of Differentiated Education:
- Differentiated education can take many forms, depending on the needs of the students in a particular classroom. For example, a teacher might provide different levels of reading material to students based on their reading level, or use different assessment methods to measure learning outcomes. In science classes, teachers might use hands-on experiments to help kinesthetic learners understand concepts, while using diagrams and videos for visual learners.
- Another example of differentiated education is providing students with multiple options for completing assignments. For instance, a teacher could offer students the choice of creating a written report, designing a multimedia presentation, or giving a class presentation to demonstrate their understanding of a particular topic.
I am very sure I have been able to convince you as a facilitator reading this, you have found this useful and you are going to practice them in your classroom? Well, in bringing this fruitful conversation to a close, I would want to re-emphasize the diverse needs of learners and as a teacher or instructor in classroom, your instructions should be tailored toward the needs, interests and the abilities of the learner. Don’t ever assume that all learners have equal interest, simply because they are in the same classroom. Adopt differentiated education as an educator and inculcate into your lessons, sense of engagement, critical thinking and problem-solving skills today.
