6.0 KEY TAKEAWAYS
Now let’s delve into the real task, we hope to make things easy and simple for you so, we are going to use simple language. Everything here will be simple and straightforward.
1.0 What is Article Writing?
Articles are piece of writing that focus on a specific subject matter. You can be asked to share your views on anything that surrounds or happening around you. For the purpose of examinations, candidates or students are asked to write on what they think, what can be done, how to do, and this mostly centres on social issues, technology, education, etc.
To write interactive articles, you need to have fair knowledge about the particle subject matter. For example, write an article for publication on the topic, “The world owes the internet a lot.”
Now if you look at the question above, your article should focus on the importance of the internet. With this, it will be difficult to write out good contents without having a fair idea about this. So what I tell students is to comb through their previous lessons to find out if they have had a lesson in any of their other subjects which are related to the subject matter.
Don’t be nervous, you are at the right place and I’m sure by the time you’re done going through this E-Book you will know to write articles and get higher score in your exams.
Now let us look at the types of articles which are examined in our examinations and what we are expected to do.
2.0 Types of Article Writing
I’ve always told students or learners I meet, no one size fits all and as a result, no one approach fits for all question types. This is why I recommend this E-Book for you and your friends
There are basically two types of article writing and we shall talk about them soon. In some cases candidates are thought one sided and when this happens, it prevents you as a learner or candidate to bulldoze your way through other article questions that requires different method and approach.
Pay attention as we begin to look at the types of article writing;
- Open Articles
- Closed or Centered Articles
The above are the types of articles writing candidates are examined on in both junior and senior high schools. The one majority of us are good at is the ‘Open Articles’ and this is because that is what we are thought in school most often.
2.1 OPEN ARTICLES
These are the articles that are not written to any particular or specific newspaper. They always begin with the expressions, ‘Write an article for publication in a newspaper on the topic,”” with the topic quoted.
Now from the above, you realized the question did not mention any particular newspaper, it just said, Newspaper. There are so many newspapers and so if any of them is not mentioned in the question, then it means it is ‘Open Article’ and you should know how to go about things. I’m sure you know what it is now?
Right, let’s also the Closed or Centered Articles
2.2 CLOSED OR CENTERED ARTICLES
This is the opposite of open articles, they are written to a particular a specific newspaper(s). So when the question goes, ‘Write an article to Editor of (name of a particular newspaper) for publication on the topic, “topic here”’ you should know it is a closed or centered article. It is also called writing to the editor.
2.2.0 FORMAT FOR EACH OF THE TWO TYPES How to Write Articles As a Student?
For open articles, the features that constitute the format are heading/title, introduction, body, conclusion and writer’s name. This can be presented in two formats, namely; blocked and indented, let see the formats below
2.2.1 BLOCKED FORMAT
With this, everything starts from the margin of your answer booklet or paper.
HEADING/TITLE
[This is written in upper case letters and neatly underlined. The heading or the title is the summary or a part of the entire question. It gives a reader a fair idea on what to expect in the article.]
- In writing the heading, you can do away with the word ‘Write’ begins the questions and copy the remaining parts of the question as your heading. Example, Write an article for publication on the topic, “social media platforms are the main cause of indiscipline among the youth.” Just take away the first word as indicated in red colour and copy the remaining as your heading.
AN ARTICLE FOR PUBLICATION ON THE TOPIC, “SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS ARE THE MAIN CAUSE OF INDISCIPLINE AMONG THE YOUTH.”
- You can as well take out the topic in the question and use it as your heading. See below
SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS ARE THE MAIN CAUSE OF INDISCIPLINE AMONG THE YOUTH.
Any of the two is correct.
Sample on How to Write Your Introduction
The Introduction
The introduction contains a brief statement about the topic given in the question. This could be a definition, general statement or anything you know about the topic. It also contains connector that will introduce or open up the body of your article.
See example below;
Social media platform is such a great platform that connects people all over the world. Meeting new friends are now easy than before, almost everything has become seemingly easy. Despite, the great importance, there is one aspect which needs to be look at, that is the rate of indiscipline among the youth since the onset of these platforms. The following are some of the indiscipline acts that are caused through social media platforms.
Looking at the introduction above, the orange coloured part is the connector which is opening up my body, with those in black blue ink, being my brief statement about the topic.
Body
This is where the actual work is done. Just like your introduction, your body should be built around well-structured paragraphs. Since we are using the block format, all our paragraphs are starting from the margin of our paper or answer booklet. In doing this, make sure you use linking words, such as firstly, secondly, thirdly, last but not the least, in conclusion so as to differentiate between paragraphs.
Each paragraph you raised should have one unique topic sentence. We shall look into topic sentences when looking at how to build paragraphs for our essays.
The body of your article should have three paragraphs if you’re writing 250 words and not more than five paragraphs if you are writing about 450 words long.
There will be a well-written article for your consumption at the end of the E-Book.
The Conclusion
You conclude your article by summing up all the points raised in your body. You can give a recommendation if you have any and end that with, ‘Thank you.’
Writer’s Name
You write your name on the next line after the conclusion.
Format for both Block and Indented Format
- BLOCKED FORMAT
HEADING
INTRODUCTION
BODY
CONCLUSION
WRITER’S NAME
- INDENTED FORMAT
HEADING
INTRODUCTION.
Introduction here,
BODY
Content of article should be here, at least three paragraphs
CONCLUSION
WRITER’S NAME
With the indented format, you leave some space at the start of every paragraph. Make sure all spaces left for all the paragraphs are the same and in line, right from introduction to conclusion.
I hope you have picked up something?
2.3.0 CLOSED/CENTERED/WRITING TO THE EDITOR
We can now look at the closed or centered articles. Like I said earlier, this is the same as writing to the editor or letter to the editor; it follows the same features and format we discussed above. Here the only thing is that, it has the features of formal letters. This means that we are going to have;
- Writer’s address
- Recipient’s address and all the features we have discussed above.
- Again, before you start with your introduction, you need to request for a space to allow you publish your article. Such articles re usually written to a particular or a specific newspaper. See a sample of the introduction below.
BLOCK FORMAT
Permit me a space in your highly esteemed newspaper to publish my article on the, “Social media platforms are the main cause of indiscipline among the youth.”

5.0 HOW TO WRITE GOOD PARAGRAPHS IN YOUR ESSAYS
Below will teach you how you can write quality paragraphs in essays to score higher marks.
Be it the WASSCE or BECE examinations, candidates are required to write essays on some selected topics and usually presented in the form of questions. These essays can be in the form of letter writing, stories, articles, speeches, argumentative, debate writing, etc. The most common ones we usually find are letter writing, stories, articles and speeches.
In all cases, come what may, we are expected to deliver high quality essays in order to be awarded the needed marks. Writing quality essays is very easy when you have the right skills and information to write on. Having only the information only does not solve the issues of bad essays, but being able to expand them in paragraphs is of essence.
Follow These Keenly
Hook on as we dive our way into know how to write better English essays in the upcoming exams, wish you a joyful reading.
- The important thing to look when you are trying to write better essays is to know the knowing the exact essay you want to write. There is an adage which goes; ‘you can’t give what you don’t have’, meaning you can’t write anything when you haven’t settled on which question to answer.
Read through all the essays and settle on the one you can answer with ease. I’ve always advised students to settle on these kinds of essays; letter writing, speeches, articles and debates. These kinds of essays allow you the writer to express yourself in so many ways.
- Now after settling on which kind of essay you are to write on, it is of great importance to plan. Planning in this context means, what are the features to include in your essays? Assuming you chose letter writing or speeches; what is embodied in the writing of such essays. Ensure that they are well laid out before you begin to write.
- The critical thing to look at, what makes up your essay is how your body is built and this body is built on paragraphs. What you should do, make good use of topic sentences; each paragraph should contain one topic sentence. The topic sentence is the main idea you will build your paragraph around.
Under no circumstance should you run through all the paragraphs using only one topic sentence. Each paragraph should have one main idea, for instance, if you raising about 4 paragraphs, each of these paragraphs should be written around one topic sentence or main idea. Writing essays in such manner makes your essays rich and lively.
- While building your paragraphs (essays) around topic sentences, there must be oneness in each paragraph. All the sentences you write under each paragraph must be related to do with the topic sentence or the main idea. If the topic sentence is talking about broken homes, the sentences coming together to form the paragraph must refer to broken homes only. Make good use of examples and illustrations as well.
Few steps to finish up, don’t give up.
- In writing quality essays, make good use of simple sentences and avoid compound or complex sentences. This means every sentience you raise under your paragraphs must be complete and should make sense. In doing so, you are going to employ more full stops. A sentence like these (My father asked that I take the books to my teacher. When I got there no one was around. It was around 6 pm in the evening.) are better than this, (My father asked that I take the books to my teacher but when I got there no one was around and it was around 6 pm in the evening.)
This is what I’m talking about; using more simple sentences makes your essay readable.
- To write better essay, one of the things you consider is to make your sentences interactive. What do I mean by this? Your next sentence should answer the possible question asked on the earlier one. Look at this example, one of the major causes of teenage pregnancy is poor parental care. The possible question you can ask on this sentence is ‘how?’ the answer to the ‘how’ should be written as your next line.
You do this throughout your entire essay, as much as possible ask questions on the sentences you raise in each paragraph. The answer you get after having asked this question is then written as your next sentence.
6.0 KEY TAKEAWAYS: Avoid these
- Avoid using shortcuts form of writing.
- Avoid using symbols such as &, /, instead write them in words.
- Do not copy contents from the question paper, even if a part of the comprehension answers one of the essays. You do this at your own risk. The examiner would have no other option than to award you zero.
- Desist from using contractions if you are writing formal letter, speeches, debates, articles and argumentative essays.
- Try to write legibly as it is a key to attracting the love of the examiner.
