Now let’s look this scenarios, is the letter you are writing a reply or not a reply? For example, your friend wrote to you or an institution wrote to you. These ones will require that you begin by telling the recipient that the letter has been received.
If it not a reply, go straight by talking about something interesting and some remarks.

- Your friend wrote to you three months ago inviting you to attend his birthday celebration but you couldn’t attend. Write to him explaining why you couldn’t show up.

In the case of formal letters, let’s take a look at these questions;
- You received a letter from your former school to represent the school at a national competition. Write to the headmaster indicating how honoured you are to have been chosen to represent the school.
- You have been selected to represent your former school to represent the school at a nation competition. Write to the headmaster indicating how honoured you are to have been chosen to represent the school.

- It gives me pleasure to write to you this letter. The reason, for which I am writing to you this letter, is to tell you how honoured I am to have been chosen to represent the school at a national competition. I cannot hide the joy I had when I received this letter from the school.
- I am on a good note to write to you this letter. The reason, for which I am writing to you this letter, is to tell you how honoured I am to have been chosen to represent the school at a national competition. It is actually such a great opportunity for me.
Now if you look at the introduction of both the informal and the letter formal letters above, you will spot some differences. Choice of words, contraction of words, etc. are not the same. In informal, you choice of words have to be informal and you can use contractions. But in formal, you cannot do that.
