Is the Reopening Date for SHS1 Postponed? Find Details Here
The Computerized Schools Selection and Placement (GES) issued the placement for about 400,000 students and above after the BECE results were made public. The first-year students are supposed to report to school on December 4th, according to the academic calendar for 2023–2024, yet numerous stakeholders nationwide have subsequently questioned this date.
The teacher union, one of the school groups, claims that since the double-track system’s implementation in 2018, they haven’t had enough time to relax. They also argued that they require enough time to get ready to receive the SHS 1 pupils.
On the other hand, given the amount of materials pupils are expected to get in their prospectuses prior to leaving for school, some parents have begun to wonder when classes will resume.
Report in Parliament by Ranking Member and Speaker’s Take
In this context, Hon. Peter Norstu-Kotoe, the ranking member of the Ghanaian parliament’s education committee, brought up the subject in a report on the floor of parliament, capturing the attention of the Speaker.
Speaking on the subject, Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. S.K. Bagbin requested that the Minister and the Ministry of Education take popular calls into consideration and reschedule the reopening date to the first week of January 2024. By now, all of the senior high school teachers and parents would have been ready to receive each and every student.
In addition, he requested that a public paper be released by the parliamentary service in which the education minister would be invited to address the house on the same subject.
Response from the GES on the Reopening Date
The Ghana Education Service’s Public Relations Officer addressed this matter by saying that the publically available academic calendar is still in effect and that SHS1 students are expected to report to class on December 4.
The question here is, however, when will the senior high form one pupils start attending classes? In a scenario where the minister delays the date until January 2024—by which point some of the freshmen would have started classes—and makes an appearance before the parliament on Monday, December 4. After traveling so far to get to their various colleges, would they return home?
In any case, students are free to choose not to report to class on December 4. Students who do not report on the day specified in the academic calendar will not lose their placement, as stated by the PRO of the GES.
