Find below the answers to the 2024 BECE Trial Questions
- (a) A specialized cell is a cell that has a specific structure and function adapted to perform particular tasks in an organism’s body.
(b) i. Sperm cells (spermatozoa)
ii. Skin cells (keratinocytes)
iii. White blood cells (leukocytes)
iv. Egg cells (ova)
(c) i. Palisade cells
ii. Guard cells
iii. Xylem cells
2. (a) The components of an ecosystem are:
i. Abiotic factors (non-living components like soil, water, air)
ii. Biotic factors (living organisms like plants, animals, microbes)
(b) An ecosystem is a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.
- (a) A compound is a substance composed of two or more different elements chemically bonded together in a fixed ratio.
(b) i. Sodium chloride (table salt)
ii. Water (H2O)
iii. Carbon dioxide (CO2)
(c) Compounds are chemically bonded substances with fixed compositions, while mixtures are physically combined substances with variable compositions.
- (a) Ions are formed when atoms gain or lose electrons. Atoms become positively charged ions (cations) by losing electrons and negatively charged ions (anions) by gaining electrons.
(b) Positively charged ions (cations):
i. Sodium ion (Na+)
ii. Calcium ion (Ca2+)
iii. Hydrogen ion (H+)
Negatively charged ions (anions):
i. Chloride ion (Cl–)
ii. Sulphate ion (SO42-)
iii. Nitrate ion (NO3–)
- (a) Homogeneous mixtures have uniform composition and appearance throughout, whereas heterogeneous mixtures have non-uniform composition and appearance. Examples:
Homogeneous: Saltwater, air
Heterogeneous: Salad, soil
- (a) The process of separating sand and salt involves dissolving the salt in water, leaving behind the insoluble sand. The steps involved include:
i. Place the sand and salt mixture in a container.
ii. Add water to the mixture and stir to dissolve the salt.
iii. Filter the mixture to separate the sand particles from the saltwater solution.
iv. Evaporate the water from the saltwater solution, leaving behind the salt.
7. (a) Crop rotation involves planting different crops in a specific order over successive seasons to maintain soil fertility, prevent pest buildup, and reduce soil erosion.
Advantages:
i. Helps in controlling pests and diseases.
ii. Improves soil fertility and structure.
iii. Reduces the depletion of specific nutrients in the soil.
(b) i. Fertilizers supply essential nutrients to plants for healthy growth.
ii. They enhance crop yield and quality.
(c) Single/straight fertilizer
Compound/mixed fertilizer
8. i. Evaporation: The process by which water changes from liquid to vapour due to heat energy from the sun.
ii. Precipitation: The release of condensed water vapour in the atmosphere in the form of rain, snow, sleet, or hail.
iii. Condensation: The process where water vapour in the air cools and changes back into liquid water.
(b) i. Provides freshwater for drinking and agriculture.
ii. Helps in maintaining balanced temperatures on Earth.
iii. Supports natural habitats and ecosystems.
9. (a) i. Egg
ii. Larva
iii. Pupa
iv. Adult
(b) i. Standing water for egg laying and larval development.
ii. Warm temperature for faster growth and development.
10. (a) i. Malaria
ii. Dengue fever
iii. Zika virus
(b) i. Eliminating stagnant water sources to prevent breeding.
ii. Using mosquito nets and repellents.
iii. Implementing proper waste management to reduce breeding sites.
