2024 BECE Examination: Updates, Changes, and Essential Details

Setting the Date for the 2024 BECE Examination
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has scheduled the 34th edition of the BECE for School Candidates to take place in July 2024. This decision follows adjustments made to the academic calendar for government basic schools.
Crafting the Academic Calendar: Collaborative Efforts
In order to reset the academic calendar for pre-tertiary level schools in Ghana, a ministerial committee, chaired by John Ntim Fordjour, collaborated with representatives from various sectors of the ministry. This collaborative effort involved stakeholders’ input to draft the new calendar.

Post-COVID Academic Calendar
The academic calendar, previously running from September to July, underwent significant changes due to COVID-19. The calendar shifted to operate from January to December until 2022, with crashed program adopted reducing the time students spend in school in order to return to the traditional schedule.
Eligibility Criteria for WASSCE/BECE Examination
Final year students in both public and private schools are eligible, including those in their final year in senior high schools.
Shift in BECE Examination Dates
The BECE examination, typically held nationwide in June, was rescheduled due to the pandemic. This year, the BECE will occur in July.
Registration Process for BECE
Registration for BECE is done electronically. Statement of Entries, CDs together with the registration fees should reach the appropriate Office of the Council by specified dates that will be determined by the Council from year to year.
Before this electronic registration done, school submit entries of all their final year students upon request, this is usually accompanied by passport photographs of students.

5 BECE Subjects
Notwithstanding, the Director of Schools and Instructions Division at the Ghana Education Service, Prince Charles Agyemang-Duah, has announced a reduction in the number of subjects to be assessed during the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE)
This decision, reached in collaboration with the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NACCA) and various stakeholders, aims to create a more focused and meaningful learning environment.
If this information is anything to go by, then the 2024 BECE candidates will evaluate students in core subjects like
Mathematics
English Language
Science
Ghanaian language
and a fifth subject known as general knowledge which candidates will be required to showcase their proficiency in concepts from diverse subjects like ICT, Social Studies, and Religious and Moral Education
Grading and Result Release
Candidate grades are determined by their performance in external exams and Continuous (Internal) Assessment marks. Results are typically released in August, allowing successful candidates to enter Senior High Schools and Technical Institutes.
Distribution of BECE Certificates
BECE certificates are sent to schools for collection by individual candidates. Unfortunately, lost or damaged certificates are not replaced, as they are produced only once.
