QUESTION 1

(a) Explain briefly how Indigenous Ghanaian understands the environment.

Indigenous Ghanaian understanding of the environment is that humans live in a religious

environment and aspects of the environment are closely related to God, the gods, the

ancestors and humans. Thus, the environment has both a physical aspect that can be seen and an unseen spiritual aspect. [6 marks]

(b) Describe briefly the reasons for the sacredness of the following aspects of the

environment according to indigenous Ghanaian culture:

Land;

According to the Indigenous Ghanaian culture, the land or the earth has a spiritual part

regarded as a goddess called Asase Yaa by the Asante and Asase Afua by the Fante. The Ewe calls her Nyibgla, because of that its needs to be sacred.

Water bodies.

According to the indigenous Ghanaian culture, many water bodies are considered as deities. this is because a god or deity is believed to reside in the water body. For example, among the Akan, the sea known as Po is presided over by a marine deity called Bosom Po, whose scared day is Tuesday. They believe that although a host of other deities lives in the water, the sea is actually the physical representation of Bosom Po. Among the Ga in Accra, Nai is the goddess of the sea Naa Korle (Korle Legoon) and Naa Sakumono (Sakumono Legoon) are two water bodies which are considered sacred to the Ga people.

(a) Explain five human activities which have negatively affected God’s beautiful creation.

Indiscriminate sand winning: The uncontrolled winning (mining / collection) of sand

from beaches or coastal areas degrades the land and destroys the beaches

Indiscriminate mining: The mining of minerals destroys the natural vegetation of the land. The use of chemicals for mining also negatively affects the land. Moreover, the dust produced pollutes the atmosphere.

Trees felling; The cutting down of trees for various purposes destroys the forest and causes desertification.

Overgrazing: Allowing cattle and other animals to feed on vegetation at a place for a very long time makes the vegetation get depleted

Disposal of solid and liquid waste in water bodies; Solid and liquid wastes dumped in water bodies such as rivers, lagoons, seas, pollute them and kill fishes and other flora (plant life) and fauna (animal life)

Indiscriminate disposal of refuse; Some people throw refuse about haphazardly. This pollutes the environment and promotes the spread of diseases

Excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides; This pollutes both the land and water bodies into which runoff flows

Crude oil spillage: Crude oil sometimes accidentally gets spilled onto the sea from oil tankers or from oil rigs. This causes pollution of the sea.

Release of toxic gases from industries; certain manufacturing industries release poisonous gases into the atmosphere. This causes air pollution.

Bush/refuse burning; The uncontrolled burning of bush destroys vegetation. Smoke from burning of bush / refuse also pollutes the atmosphere / air.

Smoking of cigarettes, marijuana, etc; Fumes from the smoking of cigarettes, marijuana, etc, contain toxic substances that pollute the air.

Excessive dust from sites; the construction of roads and buildings, mining, quarrying and other such activities release dust into the atmosphere which pollute the air.

(b) State five ways by which you can protect God’s creation.

– Planting more trees to replace ones cut down

– Planting trees to create a forest (where there was none)

– Ensuring proper disposal of refuse/ solid and liquid waste

– Campaigning for refuse / solid and liquid waste to be recycled.

– Proposing the making and enforcement of laws to prevent human activities that cause environmental degradation

– Requesting for the setting up of government agencies to control the activities of miners, sand winners and other potential polluters of the environment.

– Encouraging miners, farmers, fishermen, etc to use appropriate methods for their activities

– Reporting persons or companies that destroy the environment to the appropriate authorities for them to be arrested and prosecuted.

– Several plants provide food for animals and humankind

– Green plants release oxygen (used for respiration) into the atmosphere as a result of
